Ghalibaf after Qeshm strike: response to America will have no geographic limits

Speaking in parliament on Tuesday, 3 November, after the US strike on Qeshm, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf threatened that the Islamic Republic's response to any new attack would have no geographic limits.

Why it matters: Ghalibaf's threat shows the Islamic Republic is ready to drag the countries of the region and the hosts of US bases into the war too.

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of the Islamic Republic's parliament and head of its negotiating team, threatened in an open session of parliament on Tuesday, 3 November 2026, that the Islamic Republic's response to any American "miscalculation" would be unpredictable and would have no geographic limits. The remarks came a day after the US strike on Qeshm Island.

Ghalibaf said the Islamic Republic's armed forces were at their highest level of readiness and that the countries of the region should know the regime has its "finger on the trigger". He claimed Tehran had given Washington a "decisive and rational" answer and that the ball was now in America's court. Any American "strategic error", he said, could confront Washington with "a new battlefield".

The speaker referred to the meeting of Mojtaba Khamenei with senior military commanders on 1 November and said the Islamic Republic's military strategy against a possible attack had been drawn up at that meeting. Mojtaba Khamenei had earlier ordered a military response without geographic borders.

Strike on the Qeshm missile launcher

Unnamed US officials told The Wall Street Journal, Fox News and Axios that a US fighter jet destroyed a surface-to-air missile launcher on Qeshm on the night of Monday, 2 November, after a missile was fired from the island at a US aircraft in the Strait of Hormuz. Residents reported explosions on Qeshm, Hengam and in Bandar Abbas on Monday night. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed it had brought down two US drones south of Qeshm using electronic warfare. US Central Command has so far neither confirmed nor denied the IRGC's claim.

A threat on US election day

Ghalibaf spoke on the day Americans go to the polls in the midterm congressional elections. Benjamin Netanyahu had earlier asked Donald Trump to resume attacks on the Islamic Republic after these elections. Meanwhile Abbas Araghchi, the Islamic Republic's foreign minister, thanked Qatar and Oman for their mediation and said talks with Saudi Arabia were continuing.

A day after the US strike on Qeshm, Ghalibaf spoke of a response without geographic limits to any new attack.
