The mother of Ahmad Khosravani, a 21-year-old student at Sharif University of Technology and Tehran basketball player who was killed by direct fire from repression forces on the evening of Thursday, 8 January 2026, during the Dey uprising, wrote about her ten months of grief on her Instagram page on Wednesday, 28 October 2026.
In the post, she describes going to a shop that had the shoes her son liked, and asks Ahmad which pair she should buy for him. One line from the post, shared widely among users, asked her son why they had shot him in the heart.
Who Ahmad Khosravani was
Ahmad Khosravani was a student at Sharif University of Technology and took basketball seriously. He won Tehran's three-on-three basketball tournament with the Farzan Shemiran team and was named the best player of the Tehran league in the 2025-26 season. His family have said his father is a veteran wounded in the Iran-Iraq war.
He was shot during the nationwide protests on the evening of 8 January, one of the bloodiest nights of the Dey uprising. The Islamic Republic has so far given no official explanation of his killing, and no officer has been held accountable for it.
Pressure on the family and the removal of number 91
The Khosravani family's grief has come with pressure in these months. In July, Ahmad's sister wrote on X that the Islamic Republic's basketball federation had warned all players wearing the number 91, including women's team players, to change their numbers or be barred from competitions; it was the number tied to her brother's name.
Other families of those killed in the Dey uprising have also spoken of a grief that has not eased with the months, among them the family of Ehsan Abedini, who lost his brother and father after him.
Ten months after the shooting of 8 January, Ahmad Khosravani's mother still asks why the bullet was aimed at her son's heart.
