Russian President Vladimir Putin told Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump's special envoy, on Wednesday, 21 October 2026, that he would like to hear the American side's assessments of the crisis involving Iran and that Moscow is ready to help resolve it. The Russian news agency Interfax reported the remarks from the meeting.

No further details have been released about what was said regarding the Islamic Republic at the meeting. Witkoff's trips to Russia have so far focused mainly on the war in Ukraine, but this time the Iran file was openly on the agenda as well.

Russia's role in the Islamic Republic crisis

The meeting came a few days after Donald Trump said the US is negotiating with Russia about the Islamic Republic as well as the war in Ukraine and called Moscow's minimal help to Tehran positive. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was also in Tehran on Monday, 19 October, and in a meeting with Abbas Araghchi announced the gradual return of Russian specialists to the Bushehr power plant.

During the months of war between the Islamic Republic and the US, Moscow has repeatedly presented itself as a mediator, but in practice it has given the Islamic Republic only limited military and political support. At the same time, Qatar and Pakistan are pressing ahead with their own mediation plans, and Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan's army chief, was in Tehran on Tuesday. Putin's offer of help comes as the Strait of Hormuz remains unsafe and negotiations to end the war have produced no result.

In his meeting with Trump's envoy, Putin declared Russia ready to play a role in resolving the crisis between the Islamic Republic and the US.
