Hamid Mohammadi, a prisoner from Fasa in Fars province, was executed at dawn on Monday, 19 October 2026, in Bandar Abbas prison. The human rights news agency HRANA has confirmed his identity and said his death sentence had been issued on non-political charges.

According to HRANA, the details of the charges and of the trial of this prisoner are still being looked into. His age, and whether he had access to a lawyer, are unclear. As of the time of publication of this report, the Islamic Republic's judicial authorities had issued no statement about the execution.

Secret executions in Iran's prisons

Hamid Mohammadi's execution is one of those carried out without any official announcement. According to HRANA's figures, over the past year only about five per cent of executions were announced by official authorities or domestic media, and the rest were revealed by families and human rights organisations.

A few days ago, Milad Darvishi, a 31-year-old father, was executed in Arak prison on drug offence charges, without the authorities announcing the news. At the same time, Fatemeh Eini has been moved to a solitary cell in Lakan prison in Rasht for the carrying out of her death sentence.

Human rights organisations have repeatedly warned that the Islamic Republic uses the execution of prisoners on non-political charges, especially drug cases, to create an atmosphere of terror in society; these are cases that often proceed through brief trials, without proper access to a lawyer and on the basis of confessions extracted under pressure.

According to HRANA's figures, over the past year only about five per cent of executions in Iran were officially announced.
