Fatemeh Eyni, a 31-year-old woman from Karaj, has been transferred to a solitary confinement cell in Lakan prison in Rasht so that her death sentence can be carried out. HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists in Iran, announced the news on Monday, 19 October 2026, and said it had verified her identity.

According to HRANA, Fatemeh Eyni was arrested in spring 2021 on drug-related charges and has been held in Lakan prison in Rasht ever since. A Revolutionary Court sentenced her to death, and the sentence was recently upheld by the Supreme Court and sent to the enforcement unit to be carried out. Transferring a prisoner to solitary confinement is usually the last step before an execution.

The Islamic Republic's execution machine

In its annual report, HRANA said that at least 2,488 people were executed in Iran in the Iranian year 1404 (March 2025 to March 2026), including 63 women and 2 juvenile offenders; 13 of the executions were carried out in public. A large share of these executions are on drug-related charges, cases that, according to human rights organisations, often end in death sentences in Revolutionary Courts without a fair trial or adequate access to a lawyer.

Executions have continued in recent months, including that of Milad Darvishi, a 31-year-old father, who was executed in Arak prison on 14 October. Human rights organisations have repeatedly warned that the Islamic Republic uses executions as a tool to spread fear in society.

After the Supreme Court upheld her sentence, Fatemeh Eyni was moved to solitary confinement in Lakan prison and faces imminent execution.
