Oslo-based Iran Human Rights said in its monthly report that the Islamic Republic executed at least 70 people in September 2026. According to the organisation, the number of executions recorded from the start of 2026 to the end of September has reached 604.
According to the report, of the 70 executions in September, 34 were on murder charges, 31 on drug-related charges, four on security charges and one on a rape charge. Those executed included four women, five Afghan nationals, 11 Baluch, four Kurdish and four Arab citizens. Two protesters detained during the January uprising and two people convicted of espionage were also executed during the month. According to the organisation, only 10 cases, or about 14 percent of the recorded executions, were announced by official sources.
33 protesters in nine months
According to Iran Human Rights, the 604 executions recorded in the first nine months of the year include 22 women, 25 foreign nationals and 112 members of ethnic minorities. Thirty-three of those executed were protesters: 31 detained during the January uprising and two detained during the "Woman, Life, Freedom" movement. In addition, 13 political prisoners affiliated with banned opposition groups and 16 people accused of espionage were executed.
The organisation says the Islamic Republic uses executions as a tool of repression to spread fear in society and prevent future protests.

Executions continue in October
The pace of executions has continued into the first days of October. The Islamic Republic's judiciary executed Alireza Sepahi and Alireza Raeisi, two protesters detained in the "Alikhani Square" case in Isfahan, in the early hours of Monday, 5 October. A few days earlier, the judiciary had announced the execution of Siavash Jamshidi, a protester detained in Shahrekord. Iran Human Rights has also reported the execution of Mostafa Sharifi, a Kurdish prisoner convicted on drug-related charges, in Urmia Central Prison.
In the first nine months of 2026, the Islamic Republic executed at least 604 people, including 33 protesters.
