US Central Command (CENTCOM), in a statement on Thursday, 15 October 2026, called three Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claims made within a single day false: the claim that the IRGC controls the Strait of Hormuz, the IRGC's account of the sinking of the container ship "GFS Pride", and the claim that hundreds of American troops were killed in Jordan.
According to CENTCOM, control of the Strait of Hormuz is in the hands of the United States and its regional partners, and more than 40 commercial vessels passed through the waterway in the 24 hours before the statement; CENTCOM described the IRGC's actions in the strait as unprovoked aggression.
The container ship GFS Pride: an IRGC projectile, not a mine
The IRGC had earlier claimed that a container ship south of the Strait of Hormuz hit a sea mine and sank. CENTCOM said the Singapore-flagged ship was struck by an IRGC projectile on Wednesday, 14 October, and sank while being towed toward shore. Singapore's Maritime and Port Authority had also said earlier that the ship was hit by an unidentified projectile and that all 21 crew members were evacuated safely; DIAR had earlier reported Singapore's confirmation of the sinking of the GFS Pride.
The claim of hundreds of American troops killed
The IRGC had claimed it killed hundreds of American troops in Jordan. CENTCOM called this claim false and said three American service members were killed in Tir (June–July) while partner forces were defending against attacks by the Islamic Republic.
Background of the IRGC's claims in the war
This is not the first time CENTCOM has rejected the IRGC's accounts. A day earlier, responding to Ali Azmayi, commander of the IRGC Navy, CENTCOM had said the IRGC has no navy and that control of the strait is in the hands of the United States and its partners. In recent weeks attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz have intensified and, besides the GFS Pride, the bulk carrier "Cape Dao" has also sunk.
In the months of war the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has repeatedly made claims about killing American troops and disabling warships and tankers, and US Central Command has rejected them with detailed evidence.
CENTCOM: the IRGC hit the container ship GFS Pride with a projectile, not a mine; and the claim of killing hundreds of American troops is false.
