Esmail Khalili Baseri, a prisoner on death row, was executed at dawn on Sunday, 11 October 2026, in Adelabad prison in Shiraz. HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists in Iran, reported the execution after confirming his identity.

According to HRANA, the prisoner had earlier been arrested on non-political charges and sentenced to death; the exact charge and his age have not been disclosed. By the time this report was published, prison officials and the Islamic Republic's judicial authorities had not officially announced his execution.

Silent executions in Iran's prisons

A large share of executions in Iran are carried out without any official announcement and come to light only through human rights organisations and sources close to the families. Adelabad prison in Shiraz is one of the prisons whose executions have repeatedly been reported by these organisations.

The execution came after HRANA, in its annual report, recorded at least 2,003 executions in Iran in one year, a figure 29 percent higher than the previous year. On the same day, UN experts called for an immediate halt to executions in Iran.

The execution of Esmail Khalili Baseri in Shiraz's Adelabad prison had no official announcement for hours after it was carried out.

A wave of executions in recent days

On the same day, the Islamic Republic's judiciary announced the execution of a prisoner in Hormozgan on a charge of killing a police officer, and Iran Human Rights warned that Habibollah Ghanbarzehi Farjad, a Baluch prisoner, faces imminent execution in Kerman prison.

Human rights organisations have repeatedly said that the Islamic Republic's judiciary uses executions, in both political and non-political cases, as a tool to spread fear in society, especially in the months since the Dey uprising, during which the number of executions has risen sharply.
