Shahin Shokouhi, a PhD student in sociology at the University of Tehran's Faculty of Social Sciences, set himself on fire around noon on Sunday, 1 November 2026, in front of the Foolad building on 16 Azar Street in Tehran. The news was released by student sources at the University of Tehran and has not yet been confirmed by any other independent source.
According to the same sources, the student had been summoned several times to the university's disciplinary committee and had been under prolonged pressure from security bodies outside the university; the possibility of his arrest or of a judicial and security case against him had also been raised. He was taken to a medical centre after the incident, but no clear information about his physical condition had been released at the time of publication. Student sources say that despite his condition he remains under interrogation and security pressure.
A Dey uprising detainee
Shahin Shokouhi had been arrested during the Dey 1404 uprising. According to reports published at the time, he was detained on 30 December 2025 together with several other students and was later released. The University of Tehran's Sociology Scholarly Association condemned the arrests in a statement at the time.
Repeated summonses of students
Student media had reported in recent weeks a rise in summonses of University of Tehran students to the campus security office and the Foolad building on 16 Azar Street; according to them, some of these students were threatened. The University of Tehran and the Islamic Republic's judicial and security bodies have so far not responded to the student's self-immolation.
