Why it matters: His lone protest and arrest show that economic pressure has turned into open anger at the entire regime.

Neka protester arrested after chanting "Death to the Islamic Republic"

A citizen protesting living conditions climbed a telecommunications mast in the town of Neka, in Mazandaran province, at around 14:00 on Thursday 29 October 2026 and chanted "Death to the Islamic Republic" from the top. Videos sent by citizens and witness accounts show that after he came down he was arrested by security agents and taken to an unknown location.

The man, who introduces himself in the videos as 30 years old, says he cannot afford his family's basic needs or plan for the future, and cannot cover the cost of clothing, school and university for his children. His identity has not yet been confirmed.

"You are murderers"

According to witnesses, when people tried to bring him down, he said he would only come down if they killed him, so that everyone would know "you are murderers". Witnesses also say plainclothes agents seized the phones of some of those filming the scene.

There is no information on where he is being held or on his condition, and officials of the Islamic Republic have said nothing about his arrest.

Living costs and repression

His protest comes as the Islamic Republic's Statistical Centre has put year-on-year inflation for the month of Mehr at 88.7 percent, and the prices of the dollar and basic goods keep rising. In recent weeks security forces have also arrested other citizens on charges of calling for protests, among them a citizen in Khansar who was detained three weeks after Omid Ghanouni died in custody.
