The Panama-flagged tanker On Peace (MT On Peace) was hit by a projectile on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, while transiting the Strait of Hormuz near the coast of Oman. According to India's Ministry of External Affairs, 12 of the ship's 19 crew members were injured in the attack, 11 of them Indian nationals.

India's foreign ministry condemned the attack on the commercial vessel in a statement and said 17 of its crew are Indian. According to the ministry, the crew were evacuated from the ship with the help of the Omani authorities and the injured are being treated in the town of Khasab in Oman's Musandam governorate. At the time of publication no party had claimed responsibility for the attack and the source of the projectile had not been officially identified.

India's reaction to the attack in the Strait of Hormuz

In the statement, New Delhi called the continuing attacks on shipping in the region a cause of "deep concern" and demanded that they stop immediately. India's foreign ministry stressed that the targeting of commercial vessels, seafarers and civilian infrastructure must end and that shipping and trade through international waterways must return to normal as soon as possible.

India is one of the world's largest suppliers of seafarers, and its nationals have repeatedly been injured or killed in attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz in recent months.

The attack on On Peace is the latest in a chain of attacks that since the start of October has hit a ship almost every day in the Strait of Hormuz or the Gulf of Aden.

Wave of attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz

According to Al Jazeera, the UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has recorded at least one attack a day in the Strait of Hormuz or the Gulf of Aden since 2 October. Among them, the Kuwaiti tanker Kazimah III caught fire after being struck on 1 October, and the Liberian-flagged tanker Lipsi was hit northeast of Oman on 4 October, damaging its engine room.

On Monday, 5 October, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) threatened a tanker that it would be targeted if it did not turn back from entering the Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, the United States is continuing its naval blockade of the Islamic Republic, and CENTCOM has said it destroyed 13 blockade-running ships in 12 weeks.

Despite these attacks, according to Al Jazeera, Middle East crude exports reached about 18.3 million barrels a day at the end of September, above pre-war levels; about 40 percent of these exports now go through alternative routes outside the Strait of Hormuz.
