Borzu Rezaei, a citizen from Kermanshah and one of those detained in the Dey 1404 uprising (December 2025–January 2026), has been sentenced to death by Branch 23 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court. The human rights news agency HRANA reported on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, that the sentence was issued on a charge of "cooperation with hostile states" and was recently communicated to his lawyer.
According to HRANA, Mr Rezaei was arrested in Esfand of last year (February–March 2026), and the hearing in his case was held about two months before the sentence was communicated. He is currently held in Greater Tehran Central Prison. No further details have been released about the charges brought against him or the evidence in his case.
Death sentences for protesters of the Dey uprising
The sentence is part of a new wave of death sentences against those detained in the Dey uprising. This week Hadi Abbasian, a 38-year-old protester from Shirvan, was sentenced to death by the Bojnurd Revolutionary Court, and at dawn on Monday, 5 October, the Islamic Republic's judiciary executed Alireza Sepahi and Alireza Raeisi, two protesters in the "Alikhani Square" case in Isfahan.
The Dey 1404 uprising, which began with a strike by bazaar merchants, became one of the most widespread protests in Iran in recent years. According to human rights organisations, thousands of people were killed or wounded during its suppression, and tens of thousands were arrested or summoned.
According to Iran Human Rights, the number of recorded executions in the first nine months of 2026 has reached 604, including 33 protesters.
