Why it matters: If residents' accounts are true, the war has reached Tehran's residential neighbourhoods and the authorities are hiding it from the people.

A powerful explosion at midday on Monday, 26 October 2026, destroyed the fourth floor of a four-storey residential building on Ayat Street in Tehran's Narmak district, just past the junction with Pedarsani Street. Residents who were at the scene reported hearing the sound of a drone before the blast; Islamic Republic officials, however, attribute it to a gas leak.

According to citizen reports sent to independent Persian-language media, one passer-by wrote that they had just walked along Ayat Street and seen several cars and one floor of a building blown apart, with no one knowing what had happened. Images sent by residents of the scene after the explosion show debris strewn across the street. The account of a drone being heard before the blast has not yet been confirmed by any other independent source.

The official account: a gas leak

Jalal Maleki, spokesman for Tehran's fire department, said the incident was reported to the fire service at around 12:10 and that three stations were sent to the scene. According to him, the blast destroyed part of the walls of the fourth-floor unit, debris fell into the street and three parked cars were damaged. He claimed the residents were not at home and no one was hurt.

Maleki named a gas leak from a gas appliance, ignited by a spark from an electrical device such as a refrigerator, as the probable cause, but he himself stressed that experts will determine the exact cause. In other words, the official account is also still only a preliminary hypothesis.

Narmak and the days of war threats

Narmak itself was the scene of an attack near Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's home in Square 72 in February–March 2026. This explosion comes as US officials speak of readiness for a major strike on the Islamic Republic and residents of Hormozgan have reported a drone attack on an IRGC missile launch site in Sirik.

The Narmak explosion faces two accounts: the drone residents heard and the gas leak the authorities announced.
