On Friday 23 October 2026, the 43rd anniversary of the bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut, the White House named the Islamic Republic as the one that ordered the attack and said the memory of the 241 American service members killed will never be forgotten.
In a message on the social network X, the White House wrote that the Islamic Republic directed the attack, paid for it and commanded it; a regime that, according to the White House, Donald Trump is fighting today. The message was accompanied by an image of the ruins of the Marine barracks dated 23 October 1983 and the message that America has not forgotten.
What happened on 23 October 1983
On the morning of 23 October 1983, a truck packed with explosives crashed into the building housing the US Marines near Beirut airport. The building collapsed and 241 American service members were killed. These troops were part of the multinational peacekeeping force in Lebanon. A few minutes later a similar attack on the building housing French paratroopers in Beirut killed 58 French soldiers.
US officials have held the Islamic Republic and Lebanon's Hezbollah responsible for this attack since those years. A US federal court also found the Islamic Republic responsible for supporting the perpetrators in 2003, in a case brought by the victims' families.

An anniversary message in days of war
The White House message was published on a day when speculation about a new US strike on the Islamic Republic has intensified. Donald Trump said this week that the US can finish off the Islamic Republic very quickly, and the Islamic Republic has threatened the Persian Gulf countries with attacks on airports and pipelines.
The Beirut bombing was the first major example of a pattern the Islamic Republic has followed for four decades: war through proxy groups outside Iran's borders, at a cost the people of Iran have paid. Recalling this case at the White House shows that Washington considers the Islamic Republic's forty-year record part of the justification for today's confrontation.
Forty-three years after the Beirut bombing, the White House called the Islamic Republic the one that ordered, funded and commanded an attack that killed 241 American service members.
