This report updates: Israeli fighter jets fly night exercise toward Iran over Iraq and Syria
Dozens of Israeli Air Force fighter jets and refuelling aircraft flew in full strike formation over Syria and Iraq to within a very short distance of Iran's border during the night of Monday 19 to Tuesday 20 October 2026, then returned to their bases. According to US officials, Washington suspects Israel was hoping the Islamic Republic's air defences would open fire on the aircraft. This report follows DIAR's earlier report on the Israeli jets' night exercise.
According to these officials, whose remarks Israel's Channel 12 television aired on Wednesday 21 October, Israel expected the Islamic Republic's tracking and air defence systems to detect the aircraft, and the Americans came away with the impression that a shot fired by Tehran could have provided a pretext and an international justification for a large-scale strike inside Iran. The flight path matched the route of a possible attack on Iran.
Israel's account
Israel informed the Trump administration before the flight and described it as an exercise to show strength and reinforce deterrence against the Islamic Republic. Some Israeli and US officials also described the flight as routine deterrence activity, but critics say such a flight could have led to miscalculation, a response from Tehran and a resumption of the war. The Islamic Republic has so far shown no direct official reaction to the flight.
The flight took place a week before Israel's 27 October election and at the same time as an unannounced visit to Israel by US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. Hegseth met Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel Katz at Uvda air base; officials say the flight was unrelated to the visit.
Background
DIAR previously reported that Israeli fighter jets flew towards Iran over Iraq and Syria in a night exercise and that an Israeli security official called a resumption of the war with the Islamic Republic inevitable. Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic has still not learned its lesson and must be toppled, and Israel Katz warned that if the Islamic Republic attacks Israel, Tehran will burn.
Israeli jets went to the edge of Iran's border and came back; a test for the Islamic Republic's air defences that went unanswered.
