Hooman Shayani, a 33-year-old political prisoner from Nurabad Mamasani in Fars province, is still being held in Nurabad Mamasani prison nearly 10 months after his arrest, without any court having been convened to hear his case. His detention order has just been extended by another two months, and no date has yet been set for his trial.
The Islamic Republic's security forces arrested Hooman Shayani in the last days of December 2025, before the start of the January uprising, and transferred him to Nurabad Mamasani prison. The Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) said that by Wednesday, 21 October 2026, he had spent 9 months and 29 days in detention.
Security charges and denial of a lawyer
According to a source close to the case who spoke to HRANA, the Islamic Republic's judiciary has charged Hooman Shayani with "moharebeh (waging war against God) through acting against national security" and "propaganda against the regime". The charge of "moharebeh" can lead to a death sentence in the Revolutionary Courts and has repeatedly been used against protesters and political activists in the months since the January uprising.
Throughout this time the political prisoner has had no access to a lawyer. People close to his family say the family's difficult financial situation has left them unable to hire one. Hooman Shayani had previously been arrested and prosecuted several times because of his activities.
Long detention without trial: a recurring pattern
Keeping political prisoners in limbo for months and repeatedly extending their detention orders, without a court and without a lawyer, is one of the common methods the Islamic Republic's judiciary uses to pressure detainees and their families. DIAR had earlier reported on the limbo of Vahid Vidafar, a citizen of Tabriz and the lack of any news about Rabi Toopa Ebrahimi after his arrest in Chalus.
Hooman Shayani has been held for nearly 10 months in Nurabad Mamasani prison without trial, without a lawyer and on a charge of "moharebeh".
