Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation said the airports of the cities of Najran and Jizan in the south of the country were attacked on Monday, 5 October 2026, and that both facilities were damaged. According to the Associated Press, three people were lightly injured in the attacks.
The Saudi statement did not name who carried out the attack, but it came after the Houthis, who are backed by the Islamic Republic, said they had targeted Saudi oil facilities, airports and military bases with missiles and drones. According to the Associated Press, these are the latest attacks on Saudi airports since fighting between the kingdom and the Houthis resumed.
Houthi claims about Riyadh and Rabigh
A Houthi spokesman had earlier claimed that the group had also targeted King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and the Aramco refinery in Rabigh with missiles and drones. Saudi Arabia has so far not confirmed any damage to Riyadh airport or the Rabigh refinery; what has been officially announced is the strikes on the Najran and Jizan airports.
Saudi Arabia officially confirmed damage to the Najran and Jizan airports, but not the Houthi claim about Riyadh.
Background to the conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis
The attacks come as Yemeni government forces, backed by the Saudi-led coalition, have retaken the port of Mokha from the Houthis and, according to the Yemeni military, have launched an operation towards Sanaa, the capital held by the Houthis. The Saudi-led coalition has said 100 warplanes took part in operations against the Houthis at dawn on Monday.
Meanwhile, on 5 October Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey agreed in Riyadh to activate the Mecca defence pact and rapidly deploy military forces in Saudi Arabia against Houthi attacks.
