Donald Trump, the US president, at a campaign rally in the state of Kansas held in the early hours of Tuesday, 20 October 2026, Tehran time, once again criticised America's European allies in NATO for not joining the war with the Islamic Republic, and said this behaviour would never be forgotten.
Trump said the United States spends hundreds of billions of dollars every year to protect NATO, but when Washington asked its allies for help on the Islamic Republic issue, they answered in the negative. He described the request as a test of the allies' cooperation and said that, despite all of Europe's shortcomings, America had stood by it.
Economic and military pressure on the Islamic Republic
At the same time, the US president wrote on social media that America is still hitting the Islamic Republic hard, economically and militarily. He also thanked Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, for not doing anything to help Tehran in this war, a position he had expressed earlier when he said that America is also negotiating with Russia about the Islamic Republic.
In another part of his remarks, Trump referred to the unrest in France and Italy, attributed it to mass immigration, and accused the Democrats of trying to bring such a situation to America. The rally was held ahead of the US midterm elections in November.
Background of the dispute between Trump and NATO
Trump's criticism of NATO over the war with the Islamic Republic is not new. Last March he said most NATO member states had not wanted to take part in the operation against the Islamic Republic, and this April, after meeting NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, he wrote that the alliance had not been at America's side when it was needed. His latest remarks come days after he warned that if the Islamic Republic does not change course, America will finish the job.
Donald Trump said NATO allies answered America's request for help in the war with the Islamic Republic in the negative, and that this will not be forgotten.
