The navy of the Islamic Republic's army announced that American forces targeted the Konarak naval base on the Sea of Oman coast, in Sistan and Baluchestan province, with "two light projectiles" in the early hours of Monday, 19 October 2026. According to the army's navy, two servicemen were wounded in the attack on the Konarak naval base, and the target of the attack was a 35 mm anti-aircraft gun.
Hours after the claim was published, the US military had made no comment on it, and no independent source has confirmed the details of the attack, the type of weapon used or the extent of the damage.
Differing accounts of the attack on Konarak
The accounts published on social media are not identical. Babak Taghvaee, a military and aviation analyst, claimed the attack came after the IRGC navy tried to target an American destroyer in the northern Arabian Sea. According to him, based on a statement attributed to the navy, a US MQ-9 Reaper drone hit the base's anti-aircraft gun with a Hellfire missile after its crew opened fire on the drone. By contrast, the news account "Dezh", citing its own sources, reported that two light missiles hit the army's naval base and two people were wounded. None of these accounts has been independently confirmed.
The history of attacks on Konarak and tension in the Sea of Oman
Konarak has been targeted several times before in this war: in February–March 2026 the base was among the hundreds of targets that the US and Israel struck across Iran, and in June–July 2026 the governor of Konarak had also reported a two-stage attack by fighter jets on the navy's military zone in the county.
The new claim comes as commanders of the Islamic Republic have in recent days threatened the US and Israel with a "harsher response", and Ali Abdollahi, head of the Armed Forces General Staff, had spoken of a heavier reaction. US embassies in the region have also warned of a possible attack by the Islamic Republic and aligned groups on American interests. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had said that the US is in a defensive posture in the Strait of Hormuz and has paralysed the government's economy.
The navy of the Islamic Republic's army has reported a US attack on Konarak, but Washington has stayed silent and no independent source has confirmed it.
