Reza Akbari Adl and Mohammad Esmaili Allafi, two lawyers and members of the East Azerbaijan Bar Association, were arrested on Sunday, 18 October 2026, after being summoned to the General and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office in Tabriz. After their arrest, the two lawyers were taken to an unknown location.
HRANA, the news agency of Human Rights Activists in Iran, which reported the arrests, said there is still no information about the reason for their detention. Neither the Islamic Republic's judiciary nor the security agencies have given any explanation about the charges, where the two lawyers are being held, or whether they have access to defence counsel.
A new wave of prosecutions after the Dey uprising
Arrest without stated charges followed by transfer to an unknown location is a pattern that human rights organisations have documented in the cases of many people detained in recent months. Arresting lawyers puts the very people who should safeguard defendants' right to a defence before the Revolutionary Courts in the dock themselves.
The arrests come amid a new wave of prosecutions of protesters in various cities. On Monday, the Qazvin provincial intelligence department announced the arrest of 39 protesters from the Dey uprising, and the Karaj Revolutionary Court had earlier sentenced Homayoun Shabankar, a 22-year-old protester, to death.
Two members of the East Azerbaijan Bar Association were arrested after appearing at the Tabriz prosecutor's office, and nothing is known of their fate.
