Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will travel to Tehran on a working visit on Monday 19 October 2026 and meet Abbas Araghchi, the Islamic Republic's foreign minister. Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, announced the trip.

According to Zakharova, the two sides will review international and regional developments in detail, with developments surrounding Iran and Russia's steps to reduce tensions on the agenda. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman blamed the United States and Israel for the current tensions in the region and said these developments also affect Russia's friendly countries in the Middle East.

Lavrov's trip follows a request from the Persian Gulf states

The trip comes less than a day after the Gulf Cooperation Council states, at the Manama meeting, asked Russia to use its influence to make the Islamic Republic implement Security Council Resolution 2817. At the same time, Donald Trump has warned that if the Islamic Republic does not change course, the United States will soon finish the job.

In recent years Moscow has been one of the Islamic Republic's closest partners. Western countries have accused Tehran of sending drones and other weapons to Russia on a large scale for the war in Ukraine, and both governments are under Western sanctions. Lavrov's trip also coincides with the parliament's vote of confidence in Mehrdad Akhlaghi, a sanctioned missile manager, for the Defence Ministry.

Lavrov's trip to Tehran comes after the Persian Gulf states asked Moscow to rein in the Islamic Republic.
