JD Vance hints at disagreement with Trump over war with the Islamic Republic

JD Vance, the US vice president, hinted at his disagreement with Donald Trump over the war with the Islamic Republic in an interview published on Friday, 16 October 2026, on the podcast of Sean Spicer, the former White House spokesman. He stressed that disagreement on one issue should not prevent support for the president's other policies and achievements, and that the final decision rests with Trump.

Vance made the remarks in response to a question about his relationship with Tucker Carlson, the conservative commentator and one of the war's staunchest critics. According to Vance, one can disagree with someone on one issue and agree with them on others, and such a disagreement has existed between him and Carlson as well. Vance said Carlson is very angry about this war, that he understands Carlson's feelings, and that he has asked him not to throw out the good along with the bad. The vice president did not make clear whether his disagreement with Trump concerns the start of the war or the way it is being continued.

Decision-making in the White House

In the same interview, Vance said that in the Trump administration the president himself makes all the decisions, and that a president who is not active hands the country over to the bureaucracy. He listed the closing of the borders among Trump's achievements.

The remarks come as Donald Trump, at a campaign rally in Georgia on Friday 16 October, said the US operation against the Islamic Republic would end very soon, and as the US naval blockade, according to Central Command, has stopped the export of at least $25 billion worth of the Islamic Republic's oil. The war and its consequences, including fuel prices, have become one of the main issues of the campaign ahead of the US midterm elections.
