Gunmen opened fire on a patrol vehicle of the Nukju police station on the Bampur–Iranshahr road in Sistan and Baluchestan province on Monday morning, 5 October 2026. Two police officers were killed and another officer was wounded in the attack.

The Sistan and Baluchestan police command confirmed the incident and said operations to identify and arrest the attackers are continuing. According to state media, including the IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency, the two officers killed were named as Amirhossein Ghasemi and Nezam Dastgoshadeh. These outlets described the attackers as "mercenary terrorists" linked to the United States and Israel, and claimed they had fled and were being pursued.

Claim of responsibility

According to Iran International, a group called the "Popular Fighters Front" has claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, the group claimed its members ambushed three security forces vehicles, including two Toyota Hilux trucks and an armoured Land Cruiser. The group's claims have not been independently verified.

Background

Sistan and Baluchestan, one of Iran's most deprived provinces, has for years been the scene of armed clashes between the Islamic Republic's security forces and Baluch armed groups. At the same time, human rights organisations have repeatedly reported on the high share of Baluch citizens among those executed and on the harsh security treatment of the province's residents. According to Iran Human Rights, at least 11 Baluch prisoners were executed in September alone.

Monday's attack comes as the Islamic Republic, after the war with the United States and Israel and amid an economic crisis, has tightened the security climate in the country and accuses armed and unarmed opponents of links to the "foreign enemy".

Two police officers were killed in an ambush by gunmen in Sistan and Baluchestan, and a group called the "Popular Fighters Front" claimed responsibility.
