Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will travel to Tehran on Monday, 19 October 2026, for a working visit. Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, announced the visit on Friday, 16 October, and said the current situation in the Middle East would be the focus of Lavrov's talks in Tehran.
The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman gave no further details of the visit's programme or of Lavrov's meetings with Islamic Republic officials.
Lavrov's visit in the shadow of war and blockade
The Russian foreign minister's visit comes as the war between the Islamic Republic and the United States is in a fragile pause, the US Navy is continuing its naval blockade of the Islamic Republic's ports, and attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz have intensified in recent weeks. Donald Trump has in recent days spoken of considering new military options against the Islamic Republic.
Moscow has in recent years been one of the Islamic Republic's closest partners, and military cooperation between the two, especially in drone production, has repeatedly made headlines. A joint report by two American think tanks this week showed that the Islamic Republic's Shahed drone is produced at Russia's Alabuga plant using the labour of teenagers and deceived workers; drones that Russia uses in the war in Ukraine.
Lavrov's visit to Tehran comes as the Islamic Republic is under the pressure of a naval blockade and the threat of a new US attack.
