Fatemeh Jami, a resident of Gorgan who has been in detention for more than three months, is being denied treatment and transfer to medical facilities outside Gorgan prison despite illness and an urgent need for surgery. HRANA, the news agency of the Human Rights Activists in Iran, reported her poor physical condition on Wednesday, 14 October 2026.

According to a source close to Fatemeh Jami's family, at the time of her arrest she needed surgery because of a cyst in her chest area, but the operation has been postponed for months. The family's efforts to secure her temporary release on bail and to obtain medical leave have so far failed.

Arrested over Instagram activity

Fatemeh Jami, the mother of a 16-year-old son who lives in the Shahrak-e Jami neighbourhood of Gorgan, was arrested on 30 June 2026 when plainclothes agents of the cyber police (FATA) raided her home. Her arrest is linked to her activity online, particularly on Instagram. According to earlier reports, the Gorgan Public and Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office has informed her of the charges of "insulting the sacred" and "contact with hostile groups", a label the Islamic Republic's judiciary applies to opponents.

More than three months on, her case is still in limbo and no court hearing has yet been held for her.

Denial of treatment, a tool of pressure on prisoners

Depriving prisoners of medical care, especially political and ideological prisoners, is a well-known method of pressure in the Islamic Republic's prisons, and human rights bodies have repeatedly warned about its consequences. In recent days, too, Mokhtar Alboshokeh, an Arab political prisoner, has been held in solitary confinement in Arak prison with a kidney disease, and Reza Mohammadhosseini, a political prisoner in Ghezel Hesar, has warned that executions of those detained in the national revolution are continuing.

Fatemeh Jami has been held for months in Gorgan prison without a trial and without treatment, even though she needs surgery.
