Armed men opened fire on a military vehicle in Mehrestan county in Sistan and Baluchestan province on the morning of Wednesday, 14 October 2026. At least one officer was killed and three others wounded in the attack.

HaalVsh, the information group of Baloch activists, announced that the identity of the officer killed is still unclear. According to reports from locals, the targeted vehicle was a police patrol car. A channel reporting from locals attributed the attack to the armed group "Popular Fighters Front", but as of publication of this report no group has formally claimed responsibility. The night before, on Tuesday, 13 October, the group had in a statement claimed responsibility for several attacks in Taftan, Zahedan and Chabahar.

Armed clashes in Sistan and Baluchestan

The Mehrestan attack is the latest event in a wave of armed clashes in Sistan and Baluchestan. On Tuesday, 13 October, at least six people were killed in two clashes in Zahedan and Chah-Ahmad in Taftan, and in a seven-hour clash in the Taftan heights a number of Fatemiyoun forces were killed and wounded. HRANA had earlier announced that from late March to mid-October at least 94 people were killed in armed attacks and military operations in this province.

For years Sistan and Baluchestan has faced poverty, discrimination and widespread repression by the Islamic Republic, and fellow Baloch countrymen pay the highest price of this insecurity; both from the attacks of armed groups and from the military operations and wave of executions that the government unleashes in response.

The Mehrestan attack is the latest link in a chain of armed clashes in Sistan and Baluchestan this week.
