Nahid Khodajou, a labor activist and board member of the Free Union of Iranian Workers, was arrested once again by security forces on Tuesday, 6 October 2026. According to IranWire and the news agency HRANA, six days after the arrest there is still no information about where she is being held.

According to HRANA, citing a statement by the Free Union of Iranian Workers, security agents arrested Nahid Khodajou at her home and also searched the house. The charge against her and the body responsible for her arrest have not been announced so far, and her family has no information about her condition.

Background to Nahid Khodajou's arrests and sentence

Nahid Khodajou had previously been arrested and faced judicial proceedings because of her union activities. According to earlier HRANA reports, in a previous case she was sentenced to five years in prison on the charge of "assembly and collusion against national security" and one year in prison on the charge of "disrupting public order".

Her new arrest comes as the Islamic Republic, in the months since the January uprising, has stepped up pressure on union activists among teachers, workers and retirees. Earlier, Mahmoud Beheshti Langarudi, a teachers' union activist, was summoned to the Langarud Revolutionary Prosecutor's Office, and workers at Petropars in Hoveyzeh were flogged.

Arbitrary detention and temporary enforced disappearance

Human rights organizations have repeatedly warned that holding detainees in unknown locations and keeping their families in the dark increases the risk of intensive interrogation and forced confessions. In recent weeks, numerous reports have also emerged of civil and union activists being arrested without any charge or place of detention being announced.
