Trump after national security meeting: I will soon decide on resuming the war

Donald Trump said after his national security team's first meeting on the Islamic Republic since the congressional elections that he will soon decide whether to resume the war.

Why it matters: Trump's decision will determine whether the Islamic Republic faces a new wave of strikes or negotiating pressure, with a direct impact on Iranians' fate.

Trump after national security meeting: I will soon decide on resuming the war

US President Donald Trump held a meeting with his national security team on the Islamic Republic on Thursday 5 November, Washington time, and afterwards said he would soon decide whether or not to resume the war with the Islamic Republic. It was the White House's first meeting on the Islamic Republic since the midterm congressional elections and took place as part of the president's weekly intelligence briefing.

In the Oval Office, Trump said the main question was whether attacks should continue until the Islamic Republic's nuclear programme is completely ended. He said he would prefer not to destroy the rest of the country if possible, but might have to, adding that everyone would find out soon. Senior US officials have confirmed that the meeting was about resuming military operations. US Central Command is finalising preparations but has not yet received new orders.

Division in Trump's team

According to The Wall Street Journal, Trump's advisers are split into two camps: some want new strikes, while others say he should cut his losses and end the operation. Vice President JD Vance on Thursday called the war the reason for the Republicans' election defeat. Trump himself had earlier acknowledged that the war played a part in his party's defeat.

The Islamic Republic's proposal via Qatar

Meanwhile, the Islamic Republic has sent a new nuclear proposal to Washington through Qatari mediators, but says it will only take it forward after its seven conditions are accepted. Abbas Araghchi, the Islamic Republic's foreign minister, held phone calls on Thursday with mediators from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE, Oman and Egypt.

The regime has stepped up its propaganda against the US president in recent days; on the night of 4 November state television broadcast live a staged execution of an actor in a Trump mask in Tajrish Square.

Trump said he might have to resume attacks on the Islamic Republic and that everyone would find out soon.
