Trump: the Islamic Republic killed 75,000 protesters and will not get the bomb

Donald Trump said at the White House on Thursday 5 November that the Islamic Republic has killed at least 75,000 protesters and that reviewing the mediators' proposal changes nothing on nuclear weapons.

Why it matters: With these remarks Trump brought the killing of protesters, alongside the nuclear file, into Washington's calculation for its next step against the Islamic Republic.

Trump: the Islamic Republic killed 75,000 protesters and will not get the bomb

US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday 5 November 2026 that the Islamic Republic has killed at least 75,000 protesters over the past seven months and hanged many of them from cranes. In the same exchange he repeated that the Islamic Republic will never obtain a nuclear weapon.

Trump gave the figure without citing its source. The number of those killed in the Dey uprising and of the executions that followed has not yet been independently and fully documented, and the Islamic Republic has published no official figures on the killing of protesters.

Trump's response to the mediators' proposal

A reporter asked Trump about the Islamic Republic reviewing a set of mediators' proposals on the future of its nuclear programme and whether the United States had a role in it. Trump replied that the Islamic Republic does nothing without Washington's approval and that what it reviews makes no difference, because it will not get a nuclear weapon.

He said the United States controls the straits and the naval blockade of the Islamic Republic, and that more oil now passes through the Strait of Hormuz than before the war. Trump put the number of US service members killed in the war at 18 and added that he would prefer not to destroy the whole country, but might have to. He said the United States would soon decide on its next step and has enough munitions.

Pete Hegseth's message

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth also said in a video message that the Trump administration is determined that the Islamic Republic will never obtain a nuclear weapon and that Washington has only just begun this fight.

Trump's remarks came two days after the US midterm elections, in which the Republicans lost control of both chambers of Congress and Trump acknowledged that the Iran war played a part in his party's defeat. The day before, the Islamic Republic's television had broadcast live a staged execution of an actor in a Trump mask in Tajrish Square.

Trump said the Islamic Republic has killed at least 75,000 protesters in seven months and hanged many of them from cranes.
